Print Clustering Control

HostServe Print Clustering Solutions>>

Fundamentals of Print Load Balancing, cont. from last week

Print Clustering

Print-Clustering often refers to printing large print jobs across several printers. Large print jobs come in two basic varieties:

  • A multitude of jobs all strung together
  • A single job requiring a large number of copies.

Printing portions of these large jobs on separate printers requires a complex controller. Not only must it decide what to print on each printer, but also the printers may have other inputs and can be busy. So the algorithms for allocating the print load over the printers needs to be very flexible.

  • Equal Split
  • The Chunker
  • The Document Printers

The simplest of the three solutions is the equal split algorithm. This is where a job is split into an equal number of pages to print on several printers.

The Chunker, which is the most common, is where a certain number of pages are printed on each printer as they become available. This is often used in conjunction with a spooler, or point of control device to schedule printing during the day. For example, a large print job of a million pages could be broken up into groups of 50,000 pages per chunk. These chunks are then printed on the available printers and reassembled for submission to an inserter or other finishing device.

The Document Printers solution is where large jobs are broken up into smaller segments but only on document boundaries. Often the document’s sequence is retained in a database for reprinting should some of the pages get damaged. The documents can be broken up into either equal parts or in Chunks.

All of these processes are available with APWI’s HostServe.
