Print Load Balancing Feature in RoutXpress

Print here first!

Fundamentals of Print Load Balancing

Print Load Balancing is the practice of routing jobs to an idle printer. When a job is submitted to the system it checks to see if there is an idle printer and routes the jobs to the appropriate idle printer. The group of printers that can receive these jobs is referred to as a printer pool. There are several algorithms that the system can use to pick an appropriate printer. These are normally

  • Always First
  • Round Robin
  • Click-Balancing

The always first algorithm is used where a new printer with a lower cost per page is installed next to an older printer that is essentially used as an overflow printer. This allows most of the print traffic to be printed at the lower cost but when it gets busy the older more expensive printer takes care of the overflow.

The Round Robin printing is used where there are many printers of the same cost and capability and the work will be shared among them. The click-balancing algorithm is used when there are a certain number of clicks at a lower price available on each printer. Thus all of the low cost printing is utilized first.
