PCL, or printer command language, was originally developed by HP as a series of printer commands. Since its invention in 1984, it has become an industry-wide standard for printing. Although it was first used for inkjet printers, it has since been updated to support more technical devices. The commands used are escape sequence codes embedded in every print job before a document is sent to a printer. Although this system of codes is popular in printers created by a variety of companies, PCL is not used in all machines. This is when conversions, like PCL to PDF, are necessary to print documents. Conversely though, transfers from other formats to this one, like VIPP to PCL, can also present a problem for unprepared printers.
VIPP, or variable intelligent postscript printing, is a printing language developed by Xerox. The system was originally created by Xerox systems analysts in Switzerland for the company's personal use. Eventually though their arrangement was expanded into a system sold to other companies. As a result, VIPP has grown in popularity, but it can only be printed on Xerox printers or makes with the appropriate converters. This is why VIPP to PCL changes are necessary for printers without VIPP interpreters. The same can be said though of printers that use only XES. These would also need XES to PCL conversions. In these instances, specific printware is necessary like HostServe.
XES, or Xerox escape sequence, is another printer command language also developed by Xerox. This was created in the late 1970s and has been popular since that time. Although the commands can be changed by anyone with the appropriate knowledge, it is still not readable by all printers. XES to PCL conversions are still necessary for printers that do not accept XES commands. Just like PCL to PDF changes, printers that do not accept XES will need to be translated to a recognized code.
